Description: I am fascinated by the poison arrow frogs of Central and South America. Gorgeous, impossibly jewel like frogs that produce a toxin so deadly the native people use it to tip their spears! That’s pretty exotic stuff. A lot of animals are brightly colored just to warn off their enemies, and with these frogs the same thing applies. Birds that are frog eaters learn to avoid these frogs. Here’s a good question; if the poison is so deadly it could kill with a very small amount a very large animal, how does a bird “learn the lesson” of not eating the frog? Perhaps an occasional bird is made an example of for the rest of the flock or something. Or maybe this lesson is mysteriously passed down through the generations of birds. But wait, if you are a bird killed by the toxins in the frog, how do you pass this information down even if it mysteriously did filter into your genetic make up. Mysterious stuff. But they are certainly gorgeous frogs, and if the only reason for their beauty is to warn away predators, then perhaps we humans are the only ones to be able to appreciate them as anything but very, very bad to eat. Well, that may be true, anyway. I don’t know that birds or jaguars sit around discussing the aesthetics of the native frog populations.
