Description: I have a book at home of some outrageously adorned chameleons, one of which has blue stripes on a yellow green background with sea green legs. How can this possibly be? It is called a panther chameleon, and is native to Madagascar. In fact, despite the fact that forests are being cut down at an alarming rate, this particular chameleon is thriving because it prefers open and sunny land. There are different races of this chameleon, with some bearing orange and green colors and other surprising tones. The smallest chameleon is the pigmy leaf chameleon, a dumpy little guy no longer than half the length of my index finger. It looks rather like a leaf, with skinny little legs ending in the typical chameleon forceps- like toe arrangement. Besides pretending to be brown leaves, these little fakers also feign death to avoid being eaten. There’s another interesting species called the armored chameleon that is covered in brown spikes and looks rather sharp. It is about four inches long and lives between rocks, hiding in vegetation in western Madagascar.
