Description: I fell in love with the manatees the first time I saw them lolling around in the clear waters in a sanctuary park in Florida a number of years ago. Now I can’t design a piece of sterling silver manatee jewelry without seeing those sweet grey faces. Manatees have many unique qualities besides the obvious ones you can see just by looking at them. They have taste buds on their tongues that are used to select food, but also to help them recognize their friends and family. They can “taste” the scent marks left on objects by other manatees. Manatees still have the “equipment” for smelling, but since they stay most of the time underwater with their nose valves shut, they may not use this sense much. Manatees also have a unique ability for a constant replacement of teeth. The teeth slowly move forward from the back of each row towards the front. That would be a neat trick to have. No reason to get those cavities filled because a new tooth was on its way to replace it anyway. Dentists would have to go into some other line of work. One of the advantages to such a splendid supply of blubber is the ability to provide warmth in cool waters (although the manatees in the Atlantic Ocean try to avoid water with temperatures below 68 degrees F.) It also helps them get through periods of time when the food could be scarce, but this mostly applies to the Amazonian manatee during a season of dry weather when there aren’t any aquatic plants. A sterling silver manatee charm would really be a wonderful addition to a bracelet of sterling silver marine animal charms. The classic silver dolphin charm is another possibility. |
