Description: Cows are of course the female of this species. They are raised for milk and meat and are probably the most common of all farm animals, thus they have earned their place within my farm animal category of jewelry. Where did cows originally come from? Good question! Cows are from Europe. They’re also native to Asia and Africa. A person’s station in life and his wealth is still adjudicated by the number of cows he keeps in some places. I suppose you could say that ultimately that’s true in many places! It’s thought that the ancestor of all modern cattle is the auroch. This is the enormous cattle that some people are familiar with from the cave art in Lascaux in France. It’s thought that the wild auroch was domesticated and later wiped out so “modern” stock wouldn’t be inadvertently bred with them. In 1627 the last wild aurochs were killed. I find this interesting. The wild auroch was recreated in the 1930s by carefully breeding Highland cattle and another breed known as the Camargue fighting cattle. Apparently the original colors of the auroch reappeared, as well as their ugly temperament! Also, this recreated auroch bred true. The wonders of genetics! Now if only we could create a real Jurassic park… You were looking for a sterling silver cow charm, perhaps! Please forgive my ramblings. I really get to going with the interesting animal facts sometimes and just can’t stop! A good companion would be my classic silver mule charm or, really, anything from the sterling silver farm animal charms area. |
