Description: The early Yorkshire terriers were of much greater size than the current petite little wonders that have become so loved and admired. It is quite difficult to trace their ancestry as the dog was originally bred for the aristocracy by working men in Yorkshire. This must’ve been a lucrative source of extra income, and they were loathe to allow their “secret recipe” to get out. In other words, at least according to one of my sources, the heritage was a guarded secret! These early fanciers weren’t eager for competition. Guessing the heritage is, however possible. Seemingly the English Black and Tan Terrier must have played a part in the breeding program. This can be established by the color. There is some Maltese blood, which can be surmised by the look and feel of the coat. A Skye terrier was an element to achieve the basic temperament of the dog. The smallest “runts” of the litter were bred to get a smaller and smaller dog. Probably because of the basic good stock, using these little dogs to breed further progeny didn’t create a weak or degenerate breed. It’s interesting because the breeding of the dog was by instinct and observation rather than by the use of a textbook breeding program, but the early fanciers produced a very good little dog, indeed.
