Description: The Weimaraner is an excellent hunting dog, bred into existence in the first quarter of the 19th century by noblemen of the Court of Weimar in Germany. His original job was to track wild boar, bear and deer in the Thuringian game preserve. It sounds like the management of the animals in the preserve was not the best, because eventually all the big game were killed and the Weimaraner had to make a career change and became a bird dog. He does very well as a retriever and a pointer. He also is one of those rare dogs that can intelligently trail. His ability to work in inclement weather and in different types of cover is legion. I think with that beautiful silvery coat he must cut a dashing image sprinting across the countryside. He also makes a wonderful companion dog. I’m a little ashamed to show my ignorance, but I didn’t even realize that the Weimaraner was a working dog at all! My only connection to the dog is as an observer of his great beauty, and the only time I’ve seen them has been in the capacity of a pet.
