Description: The Shih Tzu’s ancestry is obscure. The fact that it had somewhat of a sacred status in China points to the possibility that it is quite ancient. One possibility is that this dog is the product of a cross breeding between the Lhasa Apso and an early form of the Pekingese. At any rate the Lhasa Apso and the Shih Tzu are cousins of some kind.
The word Shih Tzu, pronounced “shid-zoo” means “lion dog” in Chinese, and either refers to the proud nature of the dog or possibly to the flowing mane.
It took many years and the handling of the reluctance of Chinese officials to ever get one of these little dogs out of China and into the West. But in 1930 General Sir Douglas Brownrigg was allowed to bring a pair of Shih Tzus to Great Britain. I wonder if he just wore down the Chinese with 10 years of begging or if they were given as a gift. I don’t have that information to hand, unfortunately. I hope it wasn’t done surreptitiously, under cover of darkness. A few more were exported just 8 years later, so it sounds like the deal was above board.
My version of the fancy little dog is a sterling silver Shih Tzu charm, complete with a silver bow.
Moving to the other side of the world you'll find the unique French bulldog silver charm. These are just some of the breeds you can select from my sterling silver dog charms gifts.
