Description: The origin of the long haired dachshund is somewhat obscure, but it’s said that it has been close to its present form for about two centuries. Some have proposed the idea that there is spaniel blood in the dachshund, but there’s really no solid evidence of that. The long haired looks as much like a dachshund as does the short haired variety. In Germany the dachshund is known as the Teckel, a name that came from the replica of a small dog, distinctly dachshund looking that was on a monument of two Ancient Egyptian kings. The word teckal is on the inscription and was taken as referring to the dog, although the real meaning isn’t certain. There have also been found clay forms of a short legged long bodied dog in places as disparate as Peru, Mexico, China and Greece! But there’s no real evidence to support the idea that the dogs were in any way related the present day dachshund. They could’ve been local mutations that were then bred to continue the look because it suited some purpose at the time. The sterling silver long haired dachshund charm is one that will probably get some comments as I don’t think there are too many of them around! I have a fair number of breeds to see at my 925 dog charms home page- the Great Dane good looking silver charm is one of many. |
