Description: The golden retriever is considered an exceptional hunting dog. They have a wonderful sense of smell, and are used for many purposes because of this. Because retrieving is so much a part of its nature, you may find yourself throwing a lot of sticks. Over and over and over again! But that’s just part of the fun of owning this wonderful dog. The idea that the Golden is descended from a Russian circus dog seems to be more fantasy than anything. I did believe this at first, and have since learned that this is not really what happened. The truth is a little more mundane, it seems. The coat of the Golden Retriever seems to have some waterproof qualities, which makes sense considering the purpose to which it was bred. My image of a golden retriever is of a gentle babysitter, with a toddler crawling on his side while he lies placidly by, allowing the little one to play in his soft coat. What a good helper this dog would be to a harried mom with more than one child under the age of four. I think I should gently hint that my son and daughter in law consider adding one to the household! I’m not sure what Throckmorton the cat would think about it, though.
