Description: I love the romantic history of this breed. If this is to be believed (and why not, it certainly sounds good) the Border collie is the descendent of a cross between a dog that the Vikings brought down into Scotland and mated to local sheepherding dogs. This, if indeed it did actually occur happened in the 9th century or thereabouts. Since it’s impossible to refute it, I say we go with it. Why are they called Border collies? They were used along the border of England and Scotland, of course! These dogs have such a perky countenance- they look like they really want to work. There’s an eager expression in their eyes and their body looks ready to take off without much provocation at all. No wonder they are a natural for agility training. They weren’t recognized for a long time because some hoity-toity people didn’t think they were as graceful looking as their close relatives the rough collies. Well, they are now one of the breeds most recognized for their talent as sheep herders and their gentleness as companion dogs. And why not sport a sterling silver Border collie charm for all to see?
