Cockatoos are beautiful, exotic parrots, much desired as pets in many countries. However, in Australia and elsewhere they can be agricultural pests. It seems hard to believe. The galah, or rose breasted cockatoo, is a lovely parrot that has spread far and wide due to the agricultural activities of man providing such perfect habitats for them.
I'll bet it's humorous to an Aussie to see galahs selling in pet stores when they'd pay you to take them away in the farmlands back home! The way I look at it, is that it may help just a little to balance the scale. After all, we've managed (as a race of humans) to make it hard for so many animals and this might just be a bit of animal karma.
Because cockatoos are so common, hunting them because of their cage bird popularity doesn't even put a dent in their numbers.
Cockatoos are one of the best of the parrot mimics. Not only can they copy human speech, but they can make other noises from the sound of a dog barking to the closing of a squeaky door. I wonder if they can unlearn some of those sounds after the novelty wears off! Some cockatoos have a loud screechy call that makes them difficult to keep in the house. They probably appreciate an outdoor aviary more anyway.
Swing this pair of sterling silver cockatoo earrings from your ears and impress your bird loving friends!
