Description:
Like all my pewter designs, the lab post were a pleasant, if unexpected offshoot from the enamel painted versions of the lab design. I was initially surprised that some customers at my shows preferred the pewter version, but I thought there must be a good reason. Price, maybe? But that can’t really be the only reason. Even the colored ones are quite inexpensive, after all.
Could it be that there are women that just like the way pewter looks and feels? Of course! It is a unique metal, and the rich look and feel takes you back to a time when pewter was a common metal for casting many things, not the least of which were cups and plates to eat from.
Not that I would recommend using them for that purpose today. A lot of the earlier lead designs contained unsafe amounts of lead. My pewter jewelry is all cast in lead – free pewter so you don’t have to worry about that aspect. But I do find it amazing that people actually ate and drank from these items. I’ve heard that the main worry is in consuming acid rich food, such as tomato products, which leach the lead out more readily.
So your pewter lab post earrings have a rich history, as far as the metal they were created from. I think pewter is better utilized in a pair of earrings, myself!
