Description: Of course armadillos themselves are probably unaware of their inherent cuteness. At least to those of us who love them. Personally, I find them irresistible. Granted, many people are familiar with this odd little mammal only from their unfortunate run-ins with cars. (Armadillos jump straight up as a defense, and even when a car passes with them between the wheels, they still jump, committing armadillo suicide.) I’ve been fortunate to see them alive in the wild. Well, not exactly wild. More like on a Florida nature trail. When you live in populated areas, you do the best you can. But it was quite rewarding to watch one in motion, doing armadillo things like prowling around for grubs in the underbrush. Armadillos seem like a holdover from a more exotic time, when giant sloths meandered across the planet, and saber-toothed cats went hunting. I don’t know for sure, but it seems like there could’ve been giant versions of our modern nine banded armadillos way back when. I suppose I could do a bit of research, and perhaps I’ll write a Magic Zoo article about that someday. I have made quite a few armadillo designs in my long animal jewelry artist career. To me, these simple pewter armadillo earrings definitely hold their own right along with all the other armadillo jewelry I’ve made. |
