The Yorkie is a breed that many do admire. In fact in 2006 they jumped from number three to number two as the most popular breed behind the Labrador retriever which has been #1 two years running according to the AKC.

Now when you break it down by cities, which the AKC does, things quickly get mysterious. Is this a sophisticated, urbane metropolitan dog? It is number 2 in New York but it is number 1 in Oklahoma City! (No offense intended to Oklahoma which I love a lot but there is only one Manhattan.)

Is it a glamorous nightlife sort of a dog? Well, it is #2 in Las Vegas but it is also #2 in Tampa! I can attest that, though it is improving, downtown Tampa is nothing like Las Vegas.

Is it actually just a sweet dog that appeals to Americans in the heartland? Well, it’s  number 3 in Indianapolis and number 4 in Kansas City and it doesn’t even make the top ten in exotic Honolulu! Now I’m getting someplace. Oops, it’s not in the top ten in Milwaukee and not in the top ten in Des Moines. I give up.
