Description: There are a couple other names the Yorkshire terrier has been known by, among them the Halifax Blue and Tan terrier and the Yorkshire Blue and Tan Terrier. From the little dog’s rough and tumble beginning, he has become a genteel companion dog, extremely popular in his native Great Britain and all across the globe. I probably see more Yorkies when I’m in a crowd of people than any other dog! The first Yorkie of his kind had the colorful name of Huddersfield Ben. He was born in 1865. His children became the new breed within two decades. Even after being recognized by the British Kennel Club, the Yorkshire terrier just wasn’t that well thought of. Maybe they were just prejudiced by his poor and working class origins. It’s kind of a joke on those early “unbelievers” that the Yorkie exceeds just about every other toy dog in the popularity polls now! The little dog with the elegant golden coat is known to be a bit on the bossy side. I wouldn’t doubt that he has a working class Scottish accent if you could only hear it in dog dialect! Somehow I find that amusing.
