Even President Johnson had a pair of beagles during his tenure in the White House. He called them by name “Him and Her”. I may have known about them at the time he was president since the canine charges of he who holds the highest office in the land are often famous in their own right. It’s not hard to imagine a pair of these exuberant dogs bounding around on the White House lawn.

The facial expression of a beagle is an interesting one. They definitely look intelligent and happy, which I would venture is a good description of the breed. Their eyes are warm and brown and their expression mild and perhaps somewhat wistful. Maybe they’re pondering all those ancestral memories when their lives consisted of bounding after the scent of a rabbit. It must be difficult to resign yourself to a suburban existence after a taste of the hunting life! Maybe there should be doggie vacation spots when they can participate in the sports that they were bred for.
