Description:
One interesting bit of information about giraffes is that they have traditional places in which they give birth to their young. They’re known as “calving grounds” and are used year after year by the giraffes. They don’t even have a feature in common, such as being a particularly protected area. Sometimes the calving grounds are on an open hilltop with nothing but tall grass, other times they may be in a thicket of trees. Even if the habititat changes, the calving ground will remain constant.
The mother is the only animal present at the birth. In just a week or two the giraffe babies form their own nurseries, and seem to care for themselves without much adult supervision.
The herds of giraffes are rather scattered and often change. Giraffes appear to enjoy each other’s company up to a point, but the herds are loose and the individual animal seems more important than the group. They mostly get together for protection from lions and other predators. Also, since the giraffe is tall and can see for long distances, it is possible they can stay in contact over a long range.
My 14k gold giraffe pin is a sophisticated design that would look great on just about anything!
