Description: It is a rather heavy piece of gold jewelry, more suited to pinning on a jacket than onto a thin silk blouse. Bats have long fascinated me. It’s too bad they’re so associated with Halloween and “the dark side”, because if they were to vanish from the planet we’d all feel the effect. We need our bats! From being insect eating machines to pollinators of important tropical fruit varieties, bats are important members of the planet. The horseshoe bat is an insectivore. A few species like to live alone, but the majority form huge colonies with thousands of members. When they roost, they wrap themselves in their wings. These bats have “nose leaves” that are shaped somewhat like a horseshoe. Nose leaves come in different shapes and patterns depending on the species of bat. These odd looking flaps of skin may be related to the way different types of bats use echolocation, possibly aiming the sounds in particular directions. There are over 50 different species of horse shoe bats alone, all of them are fairly similar in appearance. This kind of bat hibernates in the winter in caves and tunnels, sometimes beginning as early as September and continuing until May or June. That seems like a long time off to me! Apparently they will come out during this time if the temperature gets high enough- at least 50 degrees and feed. My gold bat pin is my way of telling the world that I think bats are very special animals and need all the understanding we humans can give them! |
