Description: Because rats and mice are such successful animals (surviving by quickly adapting to new conditions) we humans must begrudgingly admit that they really know how to conquer adversity and adapt to change. The black rat and the brown rat are the two that people have to contend with most of the time. In other words, they’re the most common of the rats, not that people are generally contending with them a lot! (I hope not, anyway.) The black rat is also known as the roof rat because of its propensity for building his home in the roofs of buildings. It also likes to live in trees, which is where they were living when they discovered we’d created these ready made mansions for them a few hundred years ago. The brown or Norway rat lives in the lower stories of houses. It’s nice that the rats have worked out this little arrangement so they can both fill the ecological niche of our various buildings, isn’t it? I have nothing against rats as pets, and I’ve heard lots of wonderful things about their affectionate nature and smarts. But I’m thinking that a rat lover isn’t the easiest person to go shopping for, am I right? Well I hope I solved your dilemma with my gold rat pin! |
