Although some have thought the Westie was nothing more than a white Scottie (I’m not really clear on how anyone could think that) it is most certainly a separate and distinct breed. Perhaps the confusion comes from someplace in the Westie’s past when he was referred to as a White Scottish Terrier. It’s interesting how common rumors get started, often in the murky past.

He could be described as being a sporty dog, quick and intelligent as a hunter and a happy companion for someone to share their days with. I would think it a joy to go on a walk with this bouncy white dog stepping lightly beside you. He’s said to be a very pleasant and hardy dog.

The only color accepted is white. His ears are small and erect and his tail is a straight one of about 6 inches.

I have a photograph of a pair of Westies in one of my dog books and they are shown untrimmed. I find them very fetching in their natural state, but all the examples I’ve ever seen up close have been trimmed for the show bench.

The gold Westie pin is one that I would think would get much admiration and would be an item treasured for many years to come!
