Description: I think the long haired dachshund is a real cutie, and I can see how one could become sort of addicted to them. There is a certain elegance there, but also a bit of mischievous spirit, which is a nice counter point. It’s said that the longhaired doxie should have the feeling about him of being a worker, not a frilly little namby pamby dog. I like that! He can have the elegant coat without being a dandy, because the spirit of the dachshund seems to be that of the original little badger hound, and just because he has the fancy feathering he should retain the spirit that harkens back to an earlier era. This little dog is supposed to have all the attributes of a smooth coated dachshund such as being quick to defend and attack if necessary, keen sight and hearing and the traditional bark, which isn’t yippy but more sonorous. They should also retain their ability to be a good tracking dog. Their build needs to be that of a dog that is meant to hunt both above and below the ground. I hope I’ve managed to capture some of these wonderful qualities in my gold pins of canines - I have even created a dog and cat on one gold pin to round out the selection. |
