This is exactly what Poindexter and Hoover were all about. After the first time Hoover the golden retriever invited Poindexter the cat of no discernable breed to have a drink of water, they were seldom apart. Mrs. Mcgillicutty was curious about the yellow tom cat that sat on top of the fence every afternoon, quietly sharing the space with her dog.

But from inside her air conditioned house she couldn’t hear what was going on between the homeless feline and her canine companion. Hoover never left the yard unless the old lady with the white hair put the leash on him and walked around the block in the early morning before it got too hot.

So he listened with fascination as Poindexter told him about the time he was chased by the children in the next block and how he hid in an abandoned shack when the big winds came for an entire day and night, waiting for the sounds outside to be quiet. Hoover thought the life the big tom cat led was romantic, but just not to his own liking. He preferred the easy familiarity of the dog biscuit at noon and the morning walk. He wasn’t bored staying in the back yard all day, now that the cat came to tell him stories.
