Armadillos are one of the most successful animals around. Especially the nine banded one, the armadillo that we see in this country. They have a diet that isn’t fixed or rigid, so they can adapt to different regions and still prosper.

Armadillos have excellent “sniffers” and can detect insects and other small vertebrates easily. Here’s the part I love. When they have the scent of their prey, they put their nose right against the earth and hold their breath for as long as 6 minutes so they won’t inhale any dust while they’re digging. They also dig at lightening speed.

I know that armadillos are considered to be insectivores, but they also consume fungi, tubers, rotting fruit and even dead animal matter if it’s there to be had. They do love a good ant or termite. I hope they like spicy food. Maybe they could help eliminate some of the red ant population we have here in the South.
