Description: I was reading about the Galapagos tortoise recently. These are gigantic turtles that live only in the Galapagos Archipelago off the Ecuadorian coast. Their shells can be up to four feet across and they sometimes weigh more than 500 pounds. They are, however endangered because their environment has been upset by the human introduction of animals such as cats, rats and goats. Long ago sailors harvested them as meat. They look like wise old men to me. Another fascinating member of the turtle family is the leatherback sea turtle. They have been recorded as being more than 8 feet and weighing over 2,000 pounds. They don’t have a shell in the sense of other turtles. It’s considered a “dermis”. They are able to live in colder water than some of the other sea turtles. They do have a world wide range, in tropical and temperate waters. Because their primary prey is the jellyfish, some have been injured by ingesting plastic bags, which I guess look similar if they’re floating by in the ocean. They come ashore to lay their eggs, anywhere up to 160 of them on beaches at night, like other sea turtles. This is usually sometime in January, February or March.
