Chameleons have a diet that’s similar to other small lizards. They eat insects and so forth. The larger ones sometimes dine on birds and mammals as well. But chameleons have a way of capturing their food that is comparable to frogs and toads. They are able to suddenly shoot out their tongue, surprising their victim on the tip before it begins the horrifying but quick journey back into the chameleon’s mouth. It’s such a fast catch that the eye can’t easily follow it.

Here are some more details of its dining habits. The chameleon approaches the prey in its typically glacial way. Once the bug (or whatever it is) is in shooting range, the chameleon looks at it with both eyes and rocks side to side, getting ready to “shoot” its victim. The tip of the tongue protrudes. The next thing you notice is that the bug is no longer on the branch. It’s in the chameleon’s mouth. Man! You just never see that dastardly tongue at all. Perhaps it’s a merciful way to go.
