Description: The Shih Tzu dog is also known as the Chrysanthemum dog or the Lhasa lion dog. I think the reference to the flower must be because of the look of that beautiful little face, but I don’t know for sure. I came across a few words, quite poetic, which consist of the Peking Kennel Club’s breed description for the Shih Tzu. Here are some of the things that they said: “the lustrous eyes of a dragon, the oval tongue of a peony petal, the mouth of a frog, the movement of a goldfish…” I think that is just wonderful! The different color variations also had different names in Chinese. The golden color was apparently the most favored. Dogs that were solid color “yellow” dogs were referred to by a name that meant “golden basin upholding the moon.” All the other color variations had equally poetic descriptions. Probably because this dog for most of its history was an “indoor” dog, really a city inhabitant, they do quite well within the confines of an apartment or small house. Of course they should have fresh air and exercise like every living creature, but they do thrive under living in urban conditions. My gold Shih Tzu is a fun loving version of a dignified and confident little dog. |
