It must’ve been a dramatic scene with the slightly nervous games keeper leaving the safety of his little cottage to spend the night looking after his master’s animals. One never could be sure if a quiet night lay ahead, or if a desperately poor father would be prompted to steal a rabbit from the land of the local baron to keep his children from starving. There was no help from the state, you had to look after your own whatever way that circumstances required. Unfortunately, this often meant that you had to resort to thievery if certain desperate levels were reached. It was not an easy time to be poor. Enter the profession of the guard dog in the form of a bull mastiff.

The games keeper often had to put his life in jeopardy as he patrolled the land for would-be thieves. He needed help and the bull mastiff was bred for this very purpose. It was not an easy time to make your way through life on either side of the fence, but this dog was not to harm the poacher, just to hold on to him until he could be disarmed and arrested.

Lots of drama in the history of this breed!
