How long has your loving basset shared a home with you? Maybe he’s just a puppy, tripping over his ears and chewing on everything that isn’t tied down. Maybe she’s a grand old dame that has produced wonderful litters of those fetching puppies, some of which became champions of their breed.

Or maybe he’s a never been anything but a pet, exalted nowhere but in the family, petted to death by a generation of children who’s lives were enhanced by living with the friend that was always there for them, no matter what. How many times were you comforted by your low- to- the- ground friend who never wanted anything more from you but a dog biscuit and a pet on his little domed noggin?

It’s interesting to think about what the tally sheet would look like if such a thing existed on what each has been to the other, human and canine.
