Baby possums are able to hang from that wonderful pink prehensile tail for a fairly long time. I wonder if they just do it because its fun, and the adults are too fat and heavy to do it. Kind of like kids jumping on the beds.  I don't know what the baby rhinoceros equivalent might be, but for those who are interested in this much bigger, heavier example of wildlife, do be sure to admire my gold rhino pendant!

Possums are strictly American marsupials. The Virginia possum is the only one in North America, but there are several varieties in South America.

The home range of the possum is usually about 6 or 7 acres. They mostly eat at night, spending their days holed up in a burrow somewhere. Their diet is mostly rubbish these days. I have a compost area in my back yard that is frequently visited by possums which is evidenced by the little tooth marks found on watermelon rinds the next day.

Their natural diet consists of bugs, earthworms, snails and toads. They sometimes eat mice and small birds as well. They also eat vegetable matter.

For an animal that originated in South America, these marsupials have traveled far! Their range now goes all the way up into Canada. They do have a little trouble with frost bite in areas that far north, though.
