Description: Marsupials, the large family of pouched mammals to which the koala belong, are a completely different order of animals than the placental mammals we’re more familiar with (many of which can be found on my gold wild animal pendant page. We only have one native marsupial in all of the USA. And that, of course, is the opossum. Fascinating stuff!
It’s thought that the koala is descended from a land based marsupial that took to the trees more recently. Of course, in these terms “recently” is a relative thing.
It seems that the koala may be more closely related to the ringtail possums or the greater gliders than to any other marsupial. This, of course, is based on the teeth. It always seems to go back to that when you’re grouping families of animals.
The present day range of the Koala is in eastern coastal Australia. Way back when, they were common in western Australia and South Australia. They’ve been reintroduced to those areas fairly recently.
Koalas live to be about 20 years old. That may not sound too long, but compared to the opossum, our only marsupial in the USA, that’s a long time. Possums just live a few years. Although they’ve been thought of as endangered, they may be making somewhat of a comeback due to public interest.
This 14k gold koala pendant is an especially nice looking pendant which would make any koala lover proud. I also offer a smaller gold koala pendant of a single koala that may appeal to you.
