Description: Not too long ago I saw a live nine-banded armadillo while on a day hike with my son and his wife. I was in a state of euphoria for the rest of the day. Just ask my husband! Armadillos aren’t particularly fond of one another. In fact, the only time you find more than one of them in a burrow it’s because they’re a group of either four brothers or four sisters who aren’t old enough to get away from each other yet. Mating must be a particularly trying time for them. Not the most social animals on the planet. They space themselves out by marking their territory with scent glands that they have in various parts of their bodies. They must be pretty serious about this because they have glands in 4 separate body areas, including one that exudes a really nasty odor to deter others of their kind from infringing on their personal freedom of being left along as much as possible. If they do have a territorial dispute, they get down and dirty and fight it out. Mostly it involves some kicking and chasing. How could they be so charming and so full of spite for their fellows at the same time? Funny business.
