Description: I think these rodents are pretty special-still managing to survive in the wild in remote areas of Chile, despite being ruthlessly hunted for their fur. Imagine! I have heard that they make wonderful pets. I think that’s a much saner way to enjoy their luxurious pelt. The life of the chinchilla is a busy one, full of friends and family. In other words, they live communally. Even though they are nocturnal, they bask in the sun in the evening and in the early morning. It must be their version of enjoying the moonlight before retiring for bed. Chinchillas mate for life. The lady chinchilla is the dominant member of the pair. One thing I find interesting is the fact that the pregnancy lasts longer the higher the altitude of the chinchilla. Probably gives them a chance to be that much more equipped to survive if they are more developed before birth. That would be my guess, anyway. The baby chinchillas run around within just a few hours of their birth! That way the bitter cold is not as difficult for them to tolerate. It’s interesting because my usual impression of a baby rodent is a helpless little pink thing that doesn’t do much but nurse.
