Description: The donkey was definitely domesticated by the time of the ancient Egyptians. The donkey figures heavily in the artwork of those ancient ones. But even before the Egyptians’ time (Their dynasties began in 3200 B C) there were Libyans that had large herds of burros. They were used as work animals, as sources of milk and as food animals. The milk was also used to improve the complexion of these ancient maidens. The Egyptians respected their burros and it became a sacred animal along with some others they revered, like the cat. The donkey often went into the desert to find grazing areas for sheep and goats (see my sheep and goat pendants in gold on my gold farm animals pendant home). It seems that then, as well as now the burro was used as a helper with other animals. He probably brayed his warning of danger in the same way he does today if he sensed something amiss. It is wonderful how often the burro is portrayed in the art of the Egyptians. There are paintings of him in scenes of harvest and on reliefs in ancient tombs. He obviously figured greatly in the culture and the daily life of the time. I can just see this beautiful gold donkey pendant hanging daintily on a gold chain around someone’s lovely neck! |
