Description: One of the more unusual turtles I’ve ever seen is the side-necked turtle. It has such a long neck that it can’t pull it into the shell so it just sort of folds it to the side. These guys are native to places like South America, Africa and Madagascar. They live in tropical freshwater bodies of water. Some of them are quite large. The smallest one is called the Western Swamp Turtle. This reptile is extremely endangered.
A really odd looking one is called Reimann’s Snakeneck turtle. Oddly enough, it wasn’t discovered until 1990! I am always amazed when this happens. I’m sure the people who live in the area “discovered” it a long time ago, but apparently it doesn’t really count until someone from a developed nation finds out about it. It lives in rather remote rivers in Indonesia. It feeds on fish mostly since it’s an aquatic turtle.
A really bizarre looking turtle is called the Mata Mata and it has the nose of a snorkel, with flaps on its head and a neck that resembles a leaf. It has a great ability to blend into its surroundings. It is a pretty good size turtle, weighing up to 38 pounds. That’s about the size of my 3 1/2 year old grand daughter!
And if you love the unusual characteristics of turtles, you may well be a fan of my 14k bearded dragon pendant, or some of the other amazing critters on my page for gold reptile pendants.
This gold turtle pendant would be fun- just a little round gleaming turtle hanging on your neck to impress your friends with!
