Description: Manatees are thought to be the origin of the mermaid myth. I think those sailors must have really missed the girls to visualize a beautiful woman when gazing at a manatee. It’s not that I don’t think manatees are glorious creatures. I think they are beautiful as themselves, but not to compare them with a completely different species! Probably the origin of this thought was the fact that manatees may nurse their babies by holding them with one flipper, much as a human mother cradles her child. There seems to be some disagreement over whether manatees do any such thing. Most authorities think they feed their babies while lying in the water with the calf at her side. Manatee pregnancy lasts about 6 months. The babies are born singly, for the most part. The birth occurs underwater and the mother brings her calf to the surface right away to take its first breath. The baby is pink and about 3 feet long when born, weighing about 60 pounds. It’s thought that manatees have a fairly long life span, about 50 years.
