Description: The sheltie used to be referred to as the Dwarf Scotch Shepherd or the Shetland Collie. An especially cute term for it was the Peerie, which meant “fairy dog.” That seems very fitting for such a whimsical and loving small dog (another of which is my Shih Tzu 14k pendant).
On its native Shetland Isles, the dog was sometimes known as a crofter’s dog. A crofter was a person with a small plot of land where he raised his family and probably most of his food as well. I can certainly see how a sheltie would be a valuable part of a bucolic life that was meant to support life. They make excellent sheepdogs, and were sometimes expected to watch the sheep completely unsupervised by anyone. Shelties had to be superbly trustworthy. They were also considered to be quite agile and able to jump well- good attributes for a dog that had such big responsibilities.
What I didn’t realize is that not only were the equine inhabitants of the Shetland Isles diminutive, but the sheep were little as well. What better dog to herd the sheep than a dog that was closer to the size of the sheep. I would love to see the sheltie in action taking care of a herd of tiny sheep.
My gold sheltie pendant was created with this lovely little dog in mind, and, indeed, I have tried to offer as many breeds as possible on my page for dog pendants in gold.
