Description: I think the facial expression on this piece of jewelry is very “pug”, indeed, just as my schnauzer pendant in gold has that very specifically schnauzer look about him--I love these very distinctive dogs (others of which can be located on my home page for gold dog pendants). I had read a bit about the black pug in one of my references, and just came upon some more data that seemed relevant. It seems that many believe the black pug originated in Japan in the10th century AD. According to this information, the Emperor demanded the Chinese government pay him (why, we don’t know) by giving him two “pai” dogs. Pai dog was what all dogs with short legs were called at the time. These early Japanese pugs were black and white. Or possibly all black or all white. There seem to be a fountain of discrepancies concerning this event, which after all could just be a legend. There were many early breeders of this color variation in England, but the black pug to this day still isn’t as popular as the fawn. The reason may be that the wrinkles in the black pug aren’t as pronounced, maybe because their coats are just single layered. The nice thing about a gold pug pendant, is that it can certainly be representative of either the black pug or the fawn. You can decide yourself which one it is, and no one will ever be the wiser. A nice touch! |
