Description: The pit bull terrier is sometimes called the Am Staff. Among all of the dog books I come across in my work designing these dog pendants cast in gold, I just read something I found rather interesting about the history of this breed. The dog, even though it had been used as a fighting dog for many years, had had careful records kept of the pedigrees as well as various bloodlines by the owners. In the 1930s they wanted recognition of their breed, the American pit bull terrier, based on their careful record keeping, and the American Kennel Association decided they would do it. The problem was the AKC had to somehow give recognition without seeming to put a stamp of approval on the sport of dog fighting. They got around this by bestowing a new name on the dog, so it was christened the Staffordshire Terrier. I wonder if anybody noticed! When the smaller English version of the same dog was also to be recognized, they then called the larger one the American Staffordshire terrier. This was quite a few years later, I believe it was in 1972. Pretty clever! Whatever you want to call it, I do have this gold pit bull pendant for you to take a look at and maybe put on your wish list!
