Description: An unusual 19th century English name for the Maltese dog was “Shock Dog” a name that has no good reason as far as I can see. The theory is that the name referred to the shock of white hair that the breed sports. Shock of white hair? The entire dog is white! My theory is that it has to do with some kind of inside joke of the 19th century that probably wouldn’t be funny to us now even if we knew what it was.
In London’s Agricultural Hall in 1862 the Maltese appeared at his first show. He then gained a lot of popularity there. He is ever popular in the United States for good reason. This is a delightful little dog that is easily trained and is a good obedience competitor.
The Maltese has a beautiful and well-proportioned body despite the fact that he is really a tiny dog. (His weight as a show dog should be no more than seven pounds- the size of a newborn baby!)
The debate continues as to his actual origins, but I say no matter, the important thing is that he’s with us now and for that we can all be grateful.
My gold Maltese pendant is a star among all of my gold dog pendants and might be a special gift to order and tuck away for that very special Maltese lover on you list. We try to provide quality jewelry for every dog lover, from the tiny Maltese to even the hard-to-find gold pit bull pendant.
