Description: It’s said the origin of the name was from a comment made by one of the first proponents of the breed, an Earl who purchased one of the dogs from a fisherman who brought them with him on his journey from Newfoundland. This Earl of Malmesbury proclaimed “We always call mine Labradors,” which perhaps made sense at the time. At any rate, the name stuck.  (Some of these things will have to remain mysteries--the nickname "shock dog" for the model for my gold Maltese pendant is another example and I'm sure there are many more mysteries to be found surrounding the breeds on my 14k dog breed pendants home). Not too long after this, the fishermen were prohibited from selling the dogs to people in Britain due to quarantine laws. Also, and this really seems a shame, the dogs were taxed in Newfoundland, which prevented the fishermen from employing their services any longer on the fishing boats. How the fishermen continued to ply their trade isn’t mentioned. A story is told of a Viscount who went all the way to Newfoundland to try to find some Labradors in their place of origin, When he met a local breeder, he was told to go to England for the Labrador retriever! There must be a real story here about the decline of the lab in Newfoundland. I’ll bet a movie could be made about it.
