Description: This is a large dog, which ranges officially in two sizes, large to giant! Actually, the giant doesn’t seem that much bigger than the large, but I realize this is official breed talk. Whether giant or large, the bull mastiff has a reputation for speed, and is a dog I probably wouldn’t be pleased to see at my heels if I were helping myself to some of the local Lordship’s pheasants. This is the main reason this dog was bred to begin with. I would imagine he could be frightening under those circumstances. Which probably explains his strong willed personality in modern times. You wouldn’t want to have a dog that could be bribed away from a poacher with a friendly pet on the head and a slab of meat! The bull mastiff is also famed as a very alert breed of dog, which also hearkens back to those days of yore when a sound outside could signify some thievery about to take place. I’m surprised the risk taking was even considered. Of course, hungry people will do anything to feed their families, and there were no welfare handouts in centuries past. What do you think about the expression on my gold bull mastiff pendant? I like to think it evokes the power and the reliability of this dog. |
