Description: Some people keep butterflies for pets, even the large and exotic varieties from the rain forests down south of Florida. I’m talking about South America, of course. They are gorgeous, but you have to have an area large enough for them to fly around in without getting loose. I think the caterpillars of some of the exotic species are just as marvelous as the adult forms! I’m sure the reason for all that beautiful color, decorative spikes and so forth is to warn away their predators, but a side benefit is how much fun they are to look at. It’s actually possible with a little experience to identify the eggs of certain local butterflies so you can bring them in, set up a special place for them, watch them hatch, feed them and enjoy the entire transformation process from caterpillar, chrysalis to adult butterfly. And what a wonderfully educational experience for the children in your life! You can always turn to a field guide to help you identify the eggs. They must surely be out there somewhere!
