Description: So many crows look alike that sometimes the only thing that they can be identified by is their call. Crows and ravens are very adaptable birds and survive well in all kinds of climates. Some scientists feel that their intelligence allows them to figure out sources of food that they can utilize, letting them expand their range. I’m not quite clear on what that means, but I doubt they’ve mastered the can opener yet. There have been experiments with ravens that have resulted in some scientists believing they can count up to five or six. They did even better than (dare I say it) parrots in some intelligence experiments. Even observing the wild birds could lead you to believe they’re pretty smart guys. Carrion crows learned that if they dropped mussels from the air onto something hard that they could get at the soft meat when it shattered the shell. Gulls drop mussels onto the mud, but it was the crafty crow that figured out a hard surface was the way to go. Crows also have the clever, if unsavory habit of robbing bird nests of eggs when the parent birds leave their nest unguarded. The crows just watch for when the parents have left to sweep in and rob the nests. I have also cast an owl pendant in gold as another example of a remarkable wild bird that can catch our imaginations and work its way into our hearts.
