Description: Penguins are covered by three layers of feathers. It’s funny, because of their streamlined shape and because they’re flightless, I never thought about them as having feathers. Boy, that makes me sound a bit “dense”! Their body shape is really streamlined, with wings that are really flippers, and strong ones at that! They can really soar through the water like torpedoes. Their legs are set back on the body and they use them as additional rudders. (The tail is also used for this purpose.) When penguins are on land, they rest leaning back on their heels with their tail feathers propping them up! When they want to move fast on land, they toboggan. Probably most of us have seen film of that adorable yet important means of locomotion. Penguins have a fat layer to keep them warm in their watery environment. Their three layers of feathers serve as insulation as well. Penguins that live in warm climates have burrows to keep cool in and bare skin on their faces so they can lose excess heat. The penguin diet consists of crustaceans, fish and other watery critters that they catch and eat while they’re still underwater.
