Description: Elephants have to support a lot of weight, and they do this with their heavy legs which are more like pillars. The “fingers” and “toes” of the hind and forelegs are cushioned in fibers that are then within a fatty material. This allows the elephant to pad around almost noiselessly for one so huge. Because the surface of the foot is so large, it spreads the weight of the elephant out. This allows them to hardly even leave a footprint, as long as the ground isn’t muddy. The walking rate of an elephant is about 2 1/2 miles an hour. If they’re in a hurry, they can go twice this speed. A charging or fleeing elephant has been clocked at 25 miles per hour. Their digestive system is closer to that of a horse than to any other living animal. They do eat grass, as well as a lot of tougher vegetation when they have to. Besides requiring a lot of water (about 20 gallons a day to remain healthy) they have to have daily shade so they don’t over heat.
