Description: One of my sources of information about rats defines the black rat and the brown rat under one name- the common rat. This species, according to this reference, is where all the laboratory and pet rats come from. The original white rats are just albino versions of the common rat. Rats have made it all the way to Alaska, where it is said that they are subject to frostbite! Perhaps some kindly person will knit them some little rat mittens. Rats occasionally migrate in huge numbers once a local population becomes too large to support that many in one area. Other rodents do this as well, and the Scandinavian lemmings are one of the most famous of these. Unless they feel the urge to move on as in the aforementioned migration, they tend to stay in one area and make themselves at home in warehouses, barns and the like. They are pretty good swimmers and aren’t above taking a dip in a stream if there is a need. Long ago rats may have been helpful in cleaning up the environment of refuse. These days that function is handled in other ways and they are more of a parasite than a helpful cleaner upper. It’s not easy locating an aesthetic pair of rat earrings. I understood this problem and decided I would solve it in my own inimitable way! |
