Description:
I realize that chinchillas are more silvery than gold, but because their fur is so luxurious, I thought they deserved to be cast in gold. Does that make sense? Probably not. It’s a good thing artists are allowed to be eccentric.
Chinchilla litters consist of one to four babies. When they are born, they already have fur. I think they’d have to have some natural warmth when they come into this world, considering their environment.
Ancient Indians of South America used the chinchilla’s fur for blankets and clothing. The fur is still prized for coats, but if it were up to me I’d let the little tykes keep their coats and make mine from wool.
In the South American government’s favor, the hunting and export of chinchillas was banned in the early part of the 20th century. I’m always impressed to hear something like that, it shows real precociousness on the part of people to have seen the writing on the wall so long ago and to have done something about it.
The cuisine available to chinchillas on the slopes of the Andes is pretty limited. They eat very coarse grass and some herbs.
The gold chinchilla earrings do, I think, capture pretty well the way these animals look and also the kind of personality they have.
