Some bats are important for controlling harmful insects, some are important pollinators of tropical fruit. They all have their jobs to do in maintaining the healthy ecology of the planet.

Bats have been around for a very, very long time. There are fossils of bats that are thought to be about 50 million years old. Imagine! I wonder if they were giant bats. The photograph I have of a bat fossil makes it hard to tell the size from.

The teensiest bat is called, appropriately enough, the bumblebee bat. It weighs practically nothing. In fact, I have a picture in a book of a bumblebee bat snoozing in half a walnut shell. On the other side of the coin, the flying fox of Asia is the largest bat in the world. Their wingspan is 6 feet. I bet even those bats are pretty light in weight, else they would have a difficult time getting themselves air borne.
