There are so many types of turtles and I’ve been learning about a few of them recently. One is called the yellow blotched map turtle that comes from the southern Mississippi area. It is a gloriously patterned little guy with perfect yellow spots in different forms all over the shell. They love to bask and are often seen piled on top of each other on tree trunks and limbs.

Sometimes I forget how many wonderfully diverse reptiles there are practically in my own backyard here in the USA. When I saw a photograph of this guy I thought it was from somewhere exotic!

Another beauty is the spotted turtle that at one time I had a design in clay for. This turtle is another North American turtle that is all black with little yellow dots on his shell. They have a pretty big range, all the way from Florida up to Canada. It looks like they aren’t too particular about their habitat either, and live in both pastures and streams. They do prefer their environment to be moist, though.

Gold turtle earrings are really pretty, the light reflects in a very beautiful way from the rounded shell.
