Description: I am a big believer in the careful defining of words in order to learn a subject well. I came across an article by Chris Gregory in an issue of American Farrier’s Journal. He makes it very clear that a farrier should understand the anatomy of a horse as one of the tools of his trade, and also stresses the importance of knowing the nomenclature of words. Nomenclature has to do with words that are use in a specific specialized subject. It was good to see that, because if you don’t know the meanings of the words, how will you really understand what you’re doing? He gives a list of definitions in his article that are all easily and understandably defined so well that even a total layperson such as myself can follow what he’s talking about. I’m really impressed! One thing I really liked was his statement that a farrier should be able to draw the bones in a horse leg, to understand how they work together and then how the shoeing would affect the way the horse moves. If I were an up and coming farrier, this guy would be someone I would want to know! I do believe that’s not a career change I’ll be making, but it was refreshing to read some of his message. For now, let me know if I should cast you a pair of the gold hoof print earrings!
